Calling all creatives!
Are you a painter, illustrator, designer or even just a bit crafty?
We are looking for artists to enter our Frida Kahlo inspired art competition, with the winner’s work featuring on our first ever Gift Cards!
In Mexico 1925, Frida suffered a near fatal accident, which resulted in a spinal cord injury when the tram she was travelling on collided with a streetcar. During her recovery Frida filled the time by painting, as she lay in bed. As one of the world’s most famous disabled people, Frida was so much more than the famous monobrow. She was outspoken, wild, and authentic.
We want you to send us your drawings, paintings, digital art, textile designs, just about anything, inspired by this iconic artist. We encourage anyone to enter, we would love to see our supporters’ talents! The competition is open to everyone over the age of 18.
Despite living with chronic pain for the rest of her life, Frida became one of the most famous artists of the 21st century. Her work candidly depicts her experiences living with paralysis.
However, she is possibly most famous for the way she dressed, referencing the colourful and decorative cultural dress of Mexico. Wearing flowers in her hair and textiles made by Mexican tribeswomen, her look really set her apart from her contemporaries.
To enter, please send a high quality jpeg of your work to firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information:
- Your name
- Title of the work
- Medium (materials used to make your work)
- Size of the design (cm)
- Email address
- Websites or social media profiles, if relevant
- A brief paragraph about you and your work (max 200 words)
Images must be cropped to show the artwork only.
Please note, we cannot select any work that directly reproduces Frida Kahlo’s artwork. All work must be original, loosely inspired by Kahlo and produced by the entrant.
The closing date for entry is July 25th 2021. The winner will be chosen by the Spinal Research team and announced the week beginning July 28th 2021.
