The first ever function-restoring therapy designed and licensed for spinal cord injuries is approved in the UK.
The ONWARD ARC-EX spinal cord stimulation system (ARC-EX) delivers targeted, programmed electrical stimulation to the spinal cord. Clinical trials – including Spinal Research’s Pathfinder2 trial – have proved spinal stimulation helps to increase strength, movement and function when combined with activity-based rehabilitation.
This breakthrough has the power to transform lives and offers new hope to people living with paralysis.

How can we now work together to ensure new treatments reach everyone who needs them?
The Spinal Research Recovery Alliance is a major initiative, bringing you – our community of supporters – people living with paralysis, researchers, clinicians and rehabilitation centres together. The goal is to further research and accelerate delivery of breakthrough treatments, so they reach people at speed and scale.
Will you support the Recovery Alliance’s first big goal: a pilot study at three rehabilitation centres?
The study will look at how effective and efficient the new therapy is in real-world settings. You will help fund equipment and machines for the study and support other life-changing projects like it. The aim is to gather patient experience and data to help shape and drive further research – including a new clinical trial to extend its licensed use – and to speed up its delivery so that more people regain function and independence.

How will my support help over time?
Your support will help the Recovery Alliance drive research and trials into the most promising new treatments and lay the groundwork for a revolutionary, world-class clinical trials network in the UK, bringing us closer to a cure for paralysis. Together, we can get treatments, currently in the labs, to move into clinical trials faster and then into every spinal injury unit, transforming the treatment and rehabilitation landscape for people living with a spinal cord injury in the UK.
"The trial has been life changing."
"Most importantly, I’ve been able to be a Mum again – reading bedtime stories, playing games with my children, and combing my daughter’s hair. These everyday moments mean the world to me.” – Sarra, Pathfinder2 volunteer.
