We are Spinal Research

Every two hours, someone in the UK will become paralysed. Globally, it is estimated that 15.4 million people are living with paralysis. It can happen to anyone at any time, changing lives instantly.

When the spinal cord is injured it affects far more than the ability to walk. Paralysis impacts movement, sensation, continence, breathing, and much more.

Our Vision

Is a world where paralysis can be cured. To restore hope, independence, and quality of life to people living with a spinal cord injury.

We will achieve this by funding the most innovative and promising research globally, empowering the next generation of Spinal Research scientists, and pushing the boundaries of science to find a cure

Today, function-restoring treatments are in human trials, offering real hope that curing paralysis could become the medical breakthrough of the 21st century.

The science is here and progressing rapidly, but what we need now is the funding to accelerate this groundbreaking research for the millions affected in the UK and across the globe.

Together we will cure paralysis.

Our history

Spinal Research was established in 1981 by Stewart Yesner, a young man who was injured and was determined to change the future of paralysis. The goal was to fund the science needed to repair and restore the spinal cord, something which at the time seemed like an impossible challenge.

Throughout our history we have played a leadership role in shaping the international research strategy for repairing the spinal cord. This means funding and accelerating the most promising lines of research, as well as fostering collaborations between world-renowned scientific institutions.

Over the last 40 years our work has helped deliver some of the major scientific breakthroughs needed to understand the biology of the spinal cord, and importantly what is needed to repair it. Today, there are research facilities around the world developing a range of cutting-edge treatment pathways, some of which are now in clinical trial.
