Historically it was always thought that a cure for paralysis was something that was impossible. This understandably has been the overriding message given to anyone injured at any time in the past.
But modern research has made progress, and we are getting to the point where the notion of permanent paralysis can be challenged.
The major breakthroughs made over the last 40 years have led to multiple treatment approaches, many of which are delivering promising results.
With clinical trials taking place around the world, we are seeing the first generation of treatments which will deliver functional improvements for not only newly injured patients, but also those who have lived with a spinal cord injury for multiple years.
