Claire’s Pathfinder2 Story

Claire experienced meaningful improvements through the Pathfinder2 trial.

In 2017 a cluster of abnormal blood vessels in Claire’s spinal cord suddenly burst leaving the mother-of-two paralysed from the waist down. “I discovered I had no sensation or movement in my legs. It came as a complete shock. My life changed in an instant.”

Taking part in the Pathfinder2 the year-long trial enabled Claire to take her first unsupported steps in an emotional moment she never thought would happen.

“I was told my injury was complete and I just had to get used to my situation, but I refused to give up. I dreamed that one day I might take a few steps and my dream came true.

“About 10 weeks before I finished the trial, I took my first steps just using a walking frame, without any leg supports. Everyone cried.

Claire was one of ten participants whok completed 120 sessions over a year combining spinal cord stimulation therapy with activity-based rehabilitation.  “Even though it was really slow I could see improvements. My legs were getting stronger and I had hope.

"I definitely think the stimulation had a massive impact on my rehab and I can’t wait for it to be licensed in the UK."

While not all gains have continued at the same pace, Claire believes the stimulation made a significant impact on her rehabilitation. “I definitely think the stimulation had a massive impact on my rehab and I can’t wait for it to be licensed in the UK,” she says, expressing optimism for future access to this therapy.

Claire remains hopeful that continued research and further refinement of the technology will lead to more consistent and lasting improvements for people with SCI, ultimately paving the way for broader access to effective treatment options.
