In 2022, I thought I was nursing a hangover and a bit of sunstroke after a festival. Within weeks, I woke from a three and a half week coma paralysed from the chest down. I went from being a beautician and graphic designer in Newport to navigating a world that wasn’t built for me.
My journey since contracting meningitis has been one of rediscovery – from finding my independence with a BATEC electric wheelchair attachment to experiencing the emotional milestone of ‘walking’ again in a robotic exoskeleton. I am passionate about being an Ambassador for Spinal Research because I know first-hand how life can change in a heartbeat. I’ve seen the gap between hospital discharge and true rehabilitation, and I want to ensure that cutting-edge technology and neurological recovery aren’t just ‘miracles’ for the few, but a reality for everyone living with spinal cord injuries.
Part of reclaiming my life has meant getting back out there to do the things I love, like socializing and going to live gigs. But it has also sparked entirely new passions. After watching the 2024 Paralympics, I was so inspired that I decided to try archery. Fast forward to today, and I’m a proud member of my local club, the City of Newport Archers, and I am incredibly honoured to now be training with Archery GB on their Para National Progression Programme up in Lilleshall!
